Who is eligible to get an EPF account?

As per the rules of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), any salaried employee in India who earns a basic salary of up to Rs. 15,000 per month is eligible to open an EPF account. This includes full-time, part-time, and contractual employees. However, the employer can choose to contribute to the EPF account even if the employee’s salary is more than Rs. 15,000 per month.

It is mandatory for all establishments with 20 or more employees to register with the EPFO and provide EPF benefits to their employees. For establishments with fewer than 20 employees, registering with the EPFO and providing EPF benefits is optional.

Employees who join a new establishment and already have an existing EPF account can link their new EPF account with their existing Universal Account Number (UAN) to avoid multiple EPF accounts. The UAN is a unique identification number assigned to an employee contributing to the EPF.
